The World of Grandpa Don
Windy and cold broke the dawn on Saturday. Warm and snug was the house. My friend Dave commented in an email on the circumstances of my adoption and prompted a long reply. I know I have said all this before but maybe it beares repeating, ... the same thoughts, ... different words ... but this is my reply to Dave ...
I have come to believe that nothing is without purpose and I insist that
I would change nothing of my past life. Everything that has happened to
me , good, bad, or indifferent has brought me to where I am today and I
love where I am today. Even the death of Anne, the Lady of my life, a
heavy blow and major loss, was an inevitable part of life and I can
thank God for the many years she was with me. During those years she was
a positive influence on me and in me. I may add that in my earlier years, the surprises were a major problem to me, always being upset that I could not have it "my way". I had plans! I now accept the fact that life is what happens while you're planning something else. I now await the unfolding of the adventure with eagerness to see what is around the corner. The joy of life is in it's surprises. Example: How many people do you know who have been joyfully surprised at finding new brothers and sisters after having lived three quarters of a century? And speaking of that ... HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my little brother John Copeland. May he live long and prosper on the green links of life.
My prescription service is the first company that I have found that uses a date format which makes sense in this computer age. It is a format I have been using in my file names for these "What's New" pages and other date sensitive files. PrimeMail sends a emails notifying me of receipts of orders, shipping, etc., as on the date of "20090328" (YYYY-MM-DD). I then discovered that the file names of the reports that I get from Analytics.com reporting visits to my web site also use that format. It would be wonderful if this would become the universal international date format. The main advantage is that computers would then file things in date order with no further sorting necessary. It would then be a simple step to append the time of day when exactness is required to have 20090328.1412 to indicate 12 minutes after the 14th hour (2 pm) on the 28th of March in the year 2009. Hmmmmm That sounds like the opening line from every episode of the science fiction series Star Trek which always goes something like .... "Captain's log: Stardate 52630526.8 ...We are approaching the Arcnubian Nebula to rendezvous with ..." But then, science fiction writers have often preceded reality in their stories. Sometimes reality requires imagination. The city of Chicago is considering the possibility of using cameras to detect speeders, photograph their licence plates and fineing them (us) for violations. Heavens to Betsy ... what are they thinking? This is another violation of our privacy. Reporters are interviewing people to find out what they think and most are protesting the proliferation of "big brother" tactics. They say it is only a scam to get more fines to raise money for the city. Even the police union is against it ... they say it would reduce the "interaction" between the police and the public and take away the discretionary aspect of the situation. Well, what happened to obeying the law? There are reasons for speed limits and the reason is to have safe conditions for motorists and pedestrians alike. Surprise! No, ... speed limits are not there just to make it inconvenient for me or to test my ability to avoid being caught. Wouldn't it be grand if everyone obeyed speed limits and other traffic regulations? But no, when I am behind the wheel of my car, it is one of the few places where I am in charge. I am driving and the master of my vehicle. Therefore I can do anything I want. I am KING! Better than that, I am like a god and I can do anything ... as long as I am not caught. The people who complain about "Big Brother" are admitting to being law breakers and bad citizens. If we are obeying the law, we have nothing to fear. I can remember when I wish I had a big brother around to protect me from the school yard bully. Big brothers protect. So, bring on the cameras. They will make the streets more safe and yes, for those who ignore the signs posted to warn us that they are there, as they now ignore the speed limit signs, it will enrich the coffers of the city. Great! As for the objection of the police, there should probably be less discretion on their part as they are employed to enforce the law and leave judgment to the judge. The people would, I am sure, welcome less interaction with law enforcement when they are the law-breakers. I suspect that the policemen's union's fear is the possible loss of jobs for their members. But with the collection of more fines generated by the cameras, the city could hire more officers and/or raise their pay. Most of the colleges to which granddaughter Caitlin Plefka has applied have responded. I had mentioned previously that she was favoring Scripps College, part of the Claremont Colleges Consortium in California. She was accepted there but she is choosing to attend Pomona College, part of the same consortium due to a better scholarship offer. I am sure that she will get a great education there. Want to know more? see Pomona. Congratulations Caitlin. .
Rain started Saturday afternoon and continued into the wee hours of Sunday when it changed to heavy wet snow. I awakened to what looked like a blizzard with about 3" of sloppy snow on the ground and covering everything. The tree branches, and roofs were a winter wonderland. By the time I went to the 10:30 Mass it had diminished to a fine gentle snow and what little there was coming down was no problem. After Mass, I had a cup of coffee in the living room and called my little brother in Cleveland to wish him a happy birthday. He kept referring to his old age but I have 12 years on him. He is just a kid! Then of course, my big brother Jim has 7 years on me. John and I had a long conversation, well relatively long as phone conversations between brothers go. Again, this Sunday I had choices to make and plans to change. Dan & Karen had invited me to join their family for dinner and I had accepted. Then Tom called and invited me to join them to celebrate Caitlin's acceptance to Pomona College. At first I declined but rescheduling would be a problem so I accepted their invitation and had to call Karen to ask for a rain (or snow) check. It is the second time in three weeks that I had to do that. But she understood. Then Anne Marie called and invited me to their house for dinner. Bella and her parents would be there. Sorry, I had to decline. My cup, and plate, overflows! Isn't that wonderful! Dinner with Tom, Diane, Caitlin and Kelley was at Jack Gibbon's and was delightful. Caitlin had the shrimp and turf, a generous portion of shrimp and equally large filet of steak. Diane and Kelly has the "small" prime rib, 1-1/4" thick with the bone and it filled the plate. Tom and I had the "small" Filet steak, a cube of beef about 2.5 x 3 X 3". There of course was a large salad, mine with great chunks of blue cheese and ... desert ... mine was a big ice cream parfait with Amaretto. Besides the food of course, there was the company. The girls are a delight. Tom and Caitlin are preparing to got to California for Pomona College's "Mission Day" after Easter. It will be Caitlin's second visit to the campus and she hopes to connect with the swimming coach and get other information about her future school. While they are doing that, Diane and Kelly will be visiting Denver and college campuses in that area. It looks like Caitlin will be the surfing girl while, Kelly heads for the ski slopes. We all departed in high spirits and full bellies, complete with "doggie" bags. A delightful evening, indeed.
Monday morning I made my semi-annual visit to the eye doctor. He put on his Roger Dangerfield act, claiming I give him no respect by not following his instructions to use "Dry-Eyes" drops several times a day. I use Restasis, a very expensive eye medication that is supposed to lubricate the eyes but I need the over-the-counter drops as well. He said my eye lenses look like a dirty windshield on a muddy road with no washer fluid. When I blink it just streaks the muddy surface. I left promising to do better and will see him in six months. The afternoon hours brought a visit from the bank's appraiser, a pleasant and very thorough gentleman. Every room, nook and cranny was inspected accompanied by much note taking and picture taking. He poured over the original plans and plot plan, accumulating even more notes. He commented on the apparent newness of the roof, the heating and air conditioning equipment as well as the water heater. The attic insulation was checked as was the electrical service. The closets and condition of the finished basement were of special interest and in leaving he took measurements and more photos in the yard. We of course are looking for a favorable and high appraisal. Now, if it had been a tax appraisal the opposite would be true. I confess to having a double standard. An email and a warning was received from Kevin, my friend and computer guru, who operates Acute Compute. He refers us to a report from 60 Minutes. See Video. It was, to say the least, very interesting and very frightening. All I can say is that you and I must be sure to keep good quality virus protection on our computers and keep it up to date. And then, in addition, be cautious in where we go on the web and what we download. Never - ever open an email attachment unless the sender is positively identified in the body of the message as a rusted friend. I am currently receiving several emails a day in which the sender is identified as Me. Needless to say, they are immediately deleted because I know I didn't send them. I also get several each day that purport to be from the Web Ministry at St. Julie Parish. They all ask me to verify an order or confirm a shipping address or some such other ruse to get me to respond. They too are deleted. Always-always - always put a message in the body of an email that positively identifies you as the sender when you forward something or send an attachment. Learn to use the "Signature" feature of your mail software and set up a signature for yourself that is unique so that with a click you can identify yourself. If you send an attachment or a link to me without unique ID in the BODY of the email, it WILL BE DELETED.
HAPPY
BIRTHDAY
times two! I revised some pages of the parish web site on Tuesday. The Peace and Justice Ministry are promoting a Fair Trade event and sent some information. They have two different points of focus which had shared the same web page and so I made it their main page and gave Fair Trade and Joining Hands each a separate page. That way each could get the attention it needs and we could "spotlight" one or the other when needed. See Peace & Justice. The ministry has many energetic members and have been promoting Fair Trade products for some time, selling coffee, cocoa and other products at the parish after mass. I have been buying my coffee on line from a Fair Trade supplier and I love it. Last fall they introduced "Joining Hands to the parish and over 75 parish families have each "adopted" a disadvantaged child or elderly adult. It all goes to demonstrate that "we can make a difference". The reason I love the "Web Ministry" so much is that it is a ministry in itself which promotes the parish, the Catholic Church and Christianity in general and is also the servant of each and every ministry of our parish. We are involved to some extent in everything. We are a resource to the parish and the individual parishioners. We provide information for their needs and also let them know how they can serve. See Why Do We Have a Web Site. Visit St Julie Web Site. In short, being involved in our web site gives me a feeling that I am doing a service to the parish and to God. If I had lived in the time of Jesus I think I would have liked to set up a web page for Him. An email was sent from Sheila Pluchar, a friend of the family and Youth Director at St Julie parish. It had an attachment that is well worth sharing and keeping so I am doing both. It is now a permanent part of my new "Inspiration" page and I invite ... no , ... encourage you to take the time to view The Great Physician. Thanks Shiela. I knew it could be done but I didn't know how to do it. Such is often the case. So, some time was invested in experimentation and after fumbling about I discovered the secrete to sending a html page via email. Those of you who are on my mailing list for update notifications of this web page have seen the results. That is, of course, if you have your mail client set to read html formatted email. If you don't, I have no idea what you saw. I guess you could say that the experiment is continuing so if you got something strange and unreadable, let me know. There is another experiment which may be coming to an end. That is the Blog. In the several weeks it has been on this web site only one person has used it. Since it does take some time and effort to maintain it and there does not seem to be much interest in using it, I will probably remove it next week.
And ... speaking of experiments ... There is
ZumBox. The Village of Orland Park has started to use it to send
their quarterly news magazine and will extend it to all their mail
including bills for village services. A local newspaper is also using it
to "mail" their publication. It is meant to replace snail mail. I have
signed up for it. The company has added every address in the nation to
their database. Subscribers link their email address to their street
address and senders send to the street address and don't have to know
your email address. It is much cheaper and faster for them. You can then
request that paper mailings be stopped ... if not, they will continue.
Advertisers are starting to use it but you can block any sender if you
wish. It is great for people like my friend Bob who spends the winter
months in sunny Florida because his mail will follow him to wherever his
email goes. It will be great for our parish because once people
sign up for it they can send out bulk mailings for a cost of almost
nothing just by using their mailing list. It will take a while but I can
see the US Postal Service (or lack thereof) disapearing completely or
being used only for official documents which must be on paper.
Thursday is usually a busy day for me but it took a slightly different
turn for me this past week. Bible study is in recess until after Easter
but it was Mikey's bi-weekly appointment at Touch of Class. Yes,
Bichon's are a high maintenance dogs. Since they have hair, not fir,
they require baths more often as well as hair cuts. A proper bath means
that before they get wet, they must be brushed out and they must be
brushed as they dry otherwise their hair is a tangled mess. Such care is
beyond my ability and so he gets to go to the groomer often. After
dropping him off I also went to my groomer and then after getting gas,
stopped at the Quick-Lube. Yes, I got a haircut and an oil change, both
well overdue. One can't delay the fuel fill up too long or the vehicle
will simply refuse to run. After a morning of all around maintenance, I
feel better, Mikey feels better and I think the car feels better.
I almost didn't view it. Bob Clarke's email said it took over ten
minutes to run. But I am so glad I did view it. It was a link to "The
Government". Many of us think we live in a Democracy.
WE DO NOT.
And that's a good thing. This video does the best job I have ever seen
in explaining the different forms of government and how they function,
... or don't. It also explains that we live in a Republic and why our
founding fathers, in their wisdom, designed it so. Majority does not
rule ... nor should it. The law rules and it is the law that gives us
freedom, a freedom based in law and fairness to all. I invite you to
take the ten minutes and thirty five seconds to watch
"The
Government". I plead with you to take the time necessary to watch "The
Government".
I extol you to give yourself the benefit of watching
The
Government. I have gotten up on my soap box more than once trying to make the point about the fact that we have a republican form of government and this video does the job far better than I ever could. We delude ourselves when we think of it as a Democracy for a Democracy is nothing more than a big popularity contest based in the whims of whatever is fashionable at the time, whims which can smash the lives of people who happen to not be in the majority. A Republic runs on laws which hopefully are based in justice and morality and which apply to all citizens equally,
It has been another busy week, I can remember when Lent was incredibly long. This one has roared through like an express train. Next week is "Holy Week", the end of a Holy Season. If you want to experience the heart of the Catholic religion, indeed the Christian Religion, I recommend being part of the Triduum ... Holy Thursday, Good Friday, the Easter vigil. Sure, it takes time ... but what is your faith worth to you? Yes, it is intense. What would you expect for a spiritual experience? At St Julie parish this three day liturgy is liturgy at its best, a moving experience which does what it is intended to do ... bring us closer to our faith and to God. Of course, many of us aren't ready for that. Other than that ...
