The Shepard Packard Mystery

Our Packard family line and connection to the Mayflower as recorded elsewhere on this web site is well documented except for a gap in that occurs around the year 1800. We have made some logical assumptions regarding the parents and grandparents of Shepard Packard (born abt 1818). At this time the following information lacks complete documentation,. If you have any information to help please Contact Grandpa Don

The Shepard Packard Mystery #1

I have assumed that our family line continues from Shepard Packard (b Abt1818) and his wife  Martha Clay (b 1829) back through Sheppard (b abt 1795) and Abiel (b 1759) to our earliest ancestors. This has not been documented. The assumptions are as follows:

 Abiel Packard

Abiel Packard (1759-?) married Hannah Harris (1772-?) One World Tree lists six children of this marriage all born in Hebron Maine. However, until 1820, Maine was part of Massachusetts so they were actually all born in Massachusetts.  Their first son was named Shepard.

Sheperd #3 *note 1
Shepard Packard Birthdate 7/23/1795 Hebron, Oxford, ME, USA  Father Abial Packard Mother Hannah Harris

*note 1
Source Information.   Edmund West, comp..Family Data Collection-Births/Deaths(database on-line) Provo, UT, USA, The Generations Network, INc. 2001

Other children, according to One World Tree, were Lucy, Abiel, Elizebeth, Sylvanus and Ansel.

Shepard Packard

Shepard Packard's (1795-?) wife's name is unknown (May be Polly) as are the names of his children. He is listed in the 1830 Census of Foxcroft, Penobscot, Maine and his household includes:

1 boy between 5 & 10 (b between 1820 and 1825)
1 Boy & 1 girl between 10 & 15 (b Between 1815 and 1820)
3 boys & 1 Girl between 15 & 20 (b Between 1810 and 1815)

By the time of the 1840 Census the oldest boy and girl had left home. Based on the 1850 census we know that there was a Shepard Packard born in Massachusetts in 1818. Maine became a state 2 years after his birth. It is reasonable to assume that he was the first born son of this Shepard Packard.

We have records of Shepard's brothers, Abiel and his family, Sylvanus, apparently never married and was listed as a farm hand in the 1870 Census, and there are records of Ansel and his family. None have a son named Shepard.

Shepard Packard

Shepard Packard (b Abt1818) married Martha Clay (b 1829)
He was born in Massachusetts and she in New Jersey. They were married in Vermillion, Ohio by J. C. Angel, Minister of God on 26 Jun 1847. Shepard was a mould maker for metal castings.

They were the parents of eight children;  Charles Thomas,  Henry Shepard, Martha, Melvin, John W, Emily, Minnie, and Edward.

This generation and all subsequent generations are verifiable through the records of the US Census and other sources.

However ... an alternative line is described in The Shepard Packard Mystery #2 (below)

The Shepard Packard Mystery #2

Barnabas Packard and wife Sally

We do not know Barnabas' parents nor Sally's parents. We do not have either their dates of birth or his death. Sally Packard died 10 May 1804 Their children were.

  • Jedidiah Packard, born 17 June 1787

  • Shepherd Packard, born 19 April 1790

  • Susanna Packard, born 29 March 1792

  • Isaiah Packard, born 10 Dec. 1794

  • Jason Packard, born 8 Nov. 1796

  • Betsey Packard, born 9 Sept. 1798

  • Martin Packard, born 1 March 1801 on Sunday 8 o’clock E.

  • Rebecca Packard, born 15 Aug. 1802 on Monday 3 o’clock afternoon

  • Sally Packard, born 22 April 1804 on Sunday 2 o’clk P.M.
Sally Packard wife of Barnabas Packard died 10 May 1804

Could our Shepard Packard (b Abt1818) been the son of one of Barnabas' children, possibly Shepard (b 19 Apr, 1790) ?

The 1830 Census of Foxcroft, Penobscot, Maine lists a Shepard Packard (b abt 1795) and his household includes (besides himself and un-named wife):
1 boy between 5 & 10 (b between 1820 and 1825)

The Polly Jackins and Mary Jackson Mystery

. Supposedly both of these women were married to Shepherd or Shepard Packard's both of whom at one point lived in Maine. We believe Mary is the one that had about 10 children all born in Maine. Supposedly both of there sons, Abial and Abel moved to Michigan eventually. Abial married a Canadian girl and they had a couple of children that were also born in Canada.

Polly Jackins Packard may have been the wife of Shepard (b 1795) and the mother of Shepard (b abt 1818) There is a record of marriage between Shepard Packard and Polly Jackins in 1817 in Guilford, Piscataquis, Maine.

The line to the Packard's of Automobile fame

We assume that The founders of the Packard Motor Car Company, have ancestors in common with our Packard line. We have searched the internet and found reasonable evidence that William Doud Packard and James Ward Packard have a line going back to John Packard (b 20 Jan 1748 - d 07 Jan 1827) in Vermont. There the trail ends.

Who were John's parents and grandparents. Can a line be established for them back to Samuel Packard (1612-1684)? How?
