The World of Grandpa Don
I saw my GP last Friday afternoon and was very surprised that I had dropped 10 pounds! Don't ask me how. I really don't know. Along with the loss of weight were better readings on my blood tests. OK, I have been more careful about snaking in the evening, and by going to bed an hour earlier, I have removed and hour of the most tempting part of the day. Now if I could only get myself to exercise a bit ... but the spirit is reluctant and the flesh is downright obstinate.
When I arrived at home I found the photos of Caitlin' homecoming dance.
The pictures speak for themselves:
Oh ... to be young again. But no thanks. been there ... done that. It is nice to reminisce, but life lives in the now, not the past. Kelsey sent a very important bit of news. She received her first acceptance letter for college. It was from the University of Iowa and came with a generous academic scholarship offer. She has several other applications pending and one or two additional to send. A coach from the cross country team of one of the schools has come to see her run. Speaking of running, Kelsey reports: I also had another Cross Country meet on Thursday. It was the first meet that the weather was the normal autumn temperatures so it was nice to actually run in "XC Weather" as the team calls it. The Varsity team placed 2nd in the meet and I came in 23rd out of about 100 runners. I am currently 5th on the Varsity Team. I ran a Personal Best of 20 minutes and 35 seconds for 3 miles. Our season is still going great and I'll be sure to keep you updated as more Cross Country and College events come by! Good job Kelsey, academically as well as in the field. Let's keep these reports coming from all the grand kids because all our kids are grand.
Saturday I took Mikey to church. Well, to the St Francis shrine area just outside of church. It was of course the feast of St. Francis and the blessing of the animals (and their caretakers). I wore my St. Francis pilgrimage straw hat. There were about 25 dogs there and a bunch of other critters in cages and carriers. Mikey was pleased to meet new friends and it was a surprisingly quiet little liturgy that began with the people singing the Prayer of St Francis, followed by prayer and then the blessing. Although by the time we got home it was beyond Mikey's dinner time, he seemed very subdued and almost reverent. Dom and Anne Marie watched a ball game on Saturday in which RMC could do nothing wrong. It was finally ended with a score of 12 to 0 before RMC could embarrass their Indiana opponents any more. Joe did a great job behind the plate. RMC won the weekend tournament hands down, the last tournament of the fall season. When I left the house Sunday morning and told Mikey I was going to church he acted like he wanted to go with. After all, I took him to church on Saturday and that's where all those other dogs were. I have to be careful what I tell him. Anne Marie and Marc joined us a t Mass in the reserved seats for Candidates and their families. After Mass it was instruction time for the sponsors as we made a short run-through of our duties for the Rite of Acceptance. Sarah and Elizabeth will be Confirmed and receive their First Communion on the 12th after the brief ceremony in which they will become officially "Catholic". I returned home for a lazy afternoon. For dinner I grilled some brats and had them with hot German potato salad. Monday, as has been normal for the past week or so, my morning reflections have been taking place in the comfort of the living room. Afterward the email was checked and some interesting ones reviewed. Since signing up for SpamArest on 9/13 I have received 5989 email messages of which only 446 appeared in my in-box. It is a pleasure to only have to cope with about 18 emails a day and then to quickly scan the rest. At first several of the rejected ones were found to be newsletters and they are now marked approved so that in the last week or so only one or two were incorrectly rejected. Soon I will be able to simply ignore the rejects since they are held for my review on the SpamArest server for seven days and then deleted. Over 92% of the email sent to me is spam. I have an email address that I use for ordering OnLine that does not go through SpamArest so confirmations and order information emails are not blocked. That address has not found its way onto any spam lists so far ... well, it does get one or two a week, ... but that is no problem. Some mail is now blocked because Spam Arrest is now using a technology called SPF (Sender Permitted Framework) to determine the authenticity of emails entering our system. Many ISPs (Internet Service Providers) are now publishing SPF information, which states which mail servers are allowed to send mail for their domain. If it is not on the SPF list, it is blocked. At about 11:30 Joe came for "planting duty" after his morning classes. They do not have baseball practice on Mondays. We went to Ashford House for a sandwich before going to work. Then I pointed and he dug, getting my new plants in the ground. I also had him put some cuttings from Suzie with Eyes next to the back fence in the hope that they will take root there and form a backdrop for the gazebo. As Joe finished planting, I watered and when that was finished and the tools put away we just sat in the gazebo for a while. The temperature was close to 70 and it was delightful. With the end of fall baseball, Joe is hoping to find a part time job. He is well aware that his parents can not fully support 3 adult children in their household. Mark, of course has been in job hunting mode as well while Anthony is stretching his coaching dollars as best he can between playing seasons. He has five different part time jobs all in the realm of sports and sport training. It is tough to break into the job market when so many companies are "downsizing". If it were not for the war in Iraq and Afghanistan I would suggest a military enlistment to await an upturn in the economy. I know that for me, the Navy was a good choice when I was their age but times are much different now. In addition, I had dropped out of college and they have not. No, it is a different world now and you can not say that "this" worked for me over 50 years ago so it must be good for you. I am reminded of Gibran's advice about "Children". Besides, ... It goes double for me because I am talking not about Children, but GRAND children.
The above quote struck me as being quite profound. The things we hear in church are supposed to govern the way we act all week. Isn't that the reason we go to church ... to reinforce our faith and help us to put it into practice? OK, some Catholics go because they fear that missing Mass on the weekend will send them to Hell. Well folks, that may be true but it is the wrong reason to go. That is the trouble with making rules ... people show up for mass ... they "hear mass" ... thereby obeying the rule and then thinking they are "saved". The problem is that the reason for the rule is for us to participate at mass and use what we have learned to govern our lives all week. We often obey the letter of the law and fail miserably in its intent. Many will be surprised when they get to the pearly gates and find they have to stand aside and watch Tax Collectors and Prostitutes enter. (In biblical times tax collectors were countrymen in the employ of the occupying nation who got rich on what they could extort beyond the minimum tax ... sounds familiar.) I find evidence in some of the emails that I receive that Sunday's message is not getting through to us or even that it is being ignored. Is it just that we are careless about what we forward? Or is it that we actually act the opposite of what we claim to believe? When Anne and I became ministers of Communion we were told that we would be held to a higher standard in everything we did by parishioners who saw us outside of church. (I immediately removed the radar detector from my car.) In the early days of Christianity, non Christians were converted on the strength of how the Christians treated each other. We seem to have lost something in the past two centuries. In those emails, I see intolerance, calumny, and certainly not charity. The senders sometimes, unwittingly I hope, align themselves with organizations which may promote their views in some aspects but are quite radical in other respects. For my part, I am getting too close to the time of judgment. (and any time is too close). I prefer to join the reformed tax collectors and prostitutes on our way to heaven. My computer has been slowing down lately and I have been getting some strange error messages at times. I had run across a program called Uniblue Registry Booster and downloaded the Free version. At first it had found over about 200 errors in the registry. That is the part of the memory of the computer that holds all the instructions for running programs and how they interact with one another. I checked with Kevin, my computer guru who told me that it is a good program but 200 errors were not a lot ... just leftover bits of information about programs that have changed or been removed. He didn't think it would be worth the $30 to buy the full program so it could fix the registry. But as I said, I have been getting strange error messages and ... McAfee, my virus protection software has been telling me that it is removing "trojans" from some of my incoming email. I decided to run the Registry booster again and this time it found 1562 errors. I plunked down my $30 and downloaded the full version, then let it work on my system. After it rebooted, there was a noticeable difference in the start up time of the computer itself as well as in the startup time of the programs I use. By the way, those trojans have been arriving regularly in mail being sent to our web ministry email address. I don't know if that address has found its way on to some automatic list or if the sender is actually targeting religious organizations. In any case it boggles my mind that there are people out there who get their kicks trying to disrupt the lives of others. Why? What warped sense of values motivates them? They obviously have a talent, a talent which could be put to good constructive use. They don't even see the results of their maliciousness except in a remote way of hearing reports of it. There certainly is no profit in it. At least I would hope not. The thought crosses my mind that producers of software designed to detect and destroy these things may actually produce them to justify their existence. That would be like a fireman starting fires so he can be a hero. But I have heard no reports of this and hope it is not the case. I can only imagine that the Devil now has a computer department. Every one knows that the Devil's motivation is that misery loves company and that he would like to prove that he is right in defying God. He still doesn't get it.
Oh yes, these tainted emails are usually "notifications" that "my"
credit card may have been used fraudulently and that I should open the
attachment (wherein lies the devilish code) to see if I actually made
the purchases listed. But these stupid people give themselves away with
a very un-business like greeting and closing ...
Hello there Besides, when a credit card company wants to check for possible fraudulent charges they will use the phone to call Anne Marie called at the wrong time of the day. When I saw it was her calling I wondered what was wrong, but alas, it was good tidings. Mark had been to a job interview and had time to spend before going for a drug test. He didn't have my phone number but wanted to go to lunch. GREAT! He soon arrived and I put on socks and shoes (in that order) and we were off to Ashford House. All of the Albano boys like that place and so do I. We enjoyed lunch and conversation, finishing just in time for the afternoon opening of the lab on Harlem Avenue after he dropped me off at home. In any case, it looks like Marc will have landed a position and will need to let his aunt know that he will not be working in the boat yard this winter. By the way, any time any on my Grandkids want to have "Lunch With Grandpa", just give me a call (before 11:30). Grandpa loves it and will pick up the tab. Come individually or in pairs or trios.
Thursday was not a good day. That is very unusual for me. It started out normally but then I almost decided not to go to Bible Study. I knew something was wrong and should have heeded the signs. It wasn't long before I had to excuse myself and come back home. Discomfort had turned to pain. There was the urge to relieve myself but an inability to do so. Bladder infection? Joe was supposed to pick Sampson up from the groomers after 11 and I would keep him here during Joe's doctor appointment. I called Anne Marie and asked if she could have him pick up some cranberry juice on his way here. Anne used to use it for kidney and bladder problems. Anne Marie said I should go to the doctor. She was right. I called ... the doctor wasn't in but I could see the nurse practitioner at 12:30. That was fine, I knew her. The pain was becoming unbearable. I was going to go myself but was convinced to let Joe take me. Another good move. Once there Awa quickly determined that my bladder was very full and that if I had not come in I would have had to call 911. She inserted a catheter and there was instant relief. I left wearing the catheter, my obnoxious friend, and with instructions to stop taking a medication that apparently was working too well and with a new medication to reverse the other's action. In inserting the catheter Ava commented that the prostate was swollen, obviously causing the immediate problem. I will cope with the catheter until Monday when I will return to the office for further study and decisions. Joe had been diverted from picking up Sampson and Marc took care of that. My daughter is very good at logistics. When Joe got me back home he and I had some lunch and he went of to his doctor's appointment. I later was told that the doctor proclaimed that his formerly broken finger had healed well and sent him on his way. In the mean time I felt as if I had been rolled over by a Mack truck and just rested the rest of the afternoon. By the bye, can anyone use a great coffee pot? I had to confess to Awa that I still drink 5 cups or more of coffee a day. She asked me to do her a favor and cut it down to one. She thinks it may be at least part of the problem. I promised to do myself a favor and do as she suggested. I need to drink more water to make the prostate heal faster. At this point, I am wondering why I had the prostate surgery. The problems I was having before were relatively minor and the surgery was supposed to improve things and eliminate the need for medication. After the surgery, the urologist told me that my symptoms would be a little worse until I healed. Believe me, this was a lot worse and I am now on more medication. ... Questions for Monday. Except that Monday is a long time coming. I will spare you the details but ... Things got worse Thursday evening and Dan came over and took me to the ER. We enjoyed two and a half hours there. Some adjustments were made to my catheter and I went home to a mostly sleepless night. Friday morning I was back at the doctor's office and Awa replaced the catheter. She will consult with the doctor and call me later today. As a result of all this We will shorten this week's update.
