What's New
In the world of Grandpa Don

On this page I have recorded what I found significant during the past week as well as my thoughts about those events and other reflections. I started doing this before the practice became popular on the internet This is my diary, written a little each day and published weekly.

At times I may seem to pontificate on a subject that comes to mind during the week. I do not intend it as a demand or even a suggestion that everyone should think or act as I do. It is rather, intended to let you know what goes on in my mind ... how I am motivated to live as I do.

If The World of Grandpa Don appeals to you,  you are free to join me in it. Be warned, however, it is not always what some would call "The Real World".

Dear God,
Bring your peace of mind to all who are troubled with the stresses of life in this world.
Bring them the wisdom to discard the unimportant and inconsequential.
Bring them the awakening to the Eternal Truths and your love.
Bring them that feeling of wellbeing and contentment that comes with the surrender to Your will.

What Is Happening

Last week I mentioned that some people have their sprinkler systems running during the rain but I don't rely on the automatic timer but control it manually. Karen noted that their new system has a rain gage which shuts it off if it rains. Wonderful! But I just send Mikey out to the back yard and if he comes back wet I know it is raining. People who don't have a dog need a rain gage.

Can You Make The Ball Change Colors?

This will drive you crazy!  But, let's see how good you are!
When you open this web page, the ball will be dangling from your cursor.
Move the cursor and the ball also moves.  Flip the ball around and see if you can click on it.
If you do, the ball will change color!

It rained before I got up and there was another downpour during breakfast Saturday. It was one of those "inside" days so I amused myself with this electronic ball on a string. When I was a kid (About 100 years ago) I had a toy that consisted of a wooden handle with a shaft on top. A string was attached and the other end was attached to a block of wood with a hole in it. You tried to flip the block into the air using only the string and catch it on the shaft as it fell down. It worked a lot like this electronic version. Of course you had to avoid hitting yourself in the head with the block of wood. I am sure that it would not be sold today. How did we survive childhood?

After lunch, considering the fact that we had just experienced several days above 90, I decided that I would not need my snow blower for a while so I drained the tank and ran it dry. I put the gas into my storage can and then emptied it into the car. That little job was long overdue, one of those little things that slip by while the world it turning. But if I hade time to play mindless games on the computer, I had time to maintain the snow blower.

Going back to Friday evening, Anne Marie called on her way home from work to tell me that Anthony was scheduled to be interviewed on internet radio before his game,  I tuned in and enjoyed hearing his voice. He handles himself well during these interviews, without hesitation giving responses to the questions which give credit to himself and the sport in general. His replies to question are always positive and he seems to be at ease ... never flustered and never speaking negatively about any situation. Great job Anthony. And ... speaking of Anthony ... and the AllStar game in Traverse City, you're invited to view Amalbano@comcast.net's photos! You will see Dominick, Joe and Ashley too. Anne Marie was taking the pictures.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARC

Yes, Marc Albano passes another milestone in life. In my earlier days (not too long ago) I avoided going shopping with Anne because I would be very impatient with her as she studied every item in great detail. These days I find myself doing that myself more than ever. This is particularly true when I select a birthday card. The card must fit the person as well as our relationship. When I went to get a card for Marc my eye was immediately attracted to one with a baseball theme. It was great but it was not what I wanted to say. I had to look further until I found one that expressed what I wanted wanted to say. I left the store with both cards and so Marc got two cards from me this year.

Sunday afternoon I went to Dan & Karen's. We enjoyed a couple hours at poolside on a beautiful afternoon. Dinner consisted of three kinds of grilled sausages and potatoes. I had a couple plump and spicy ones, new to me, and delicious. I like spicy! I brought home one of the same along with an Italian sausage, always a favorite. Nick sampled a chicken & apple sausage which he characterized as a fruit salad on a bun. On his recommendation, I avoided that selection.  Karen proclaimed them as being very good. Maybe so but  if I am to have a sausage, I like it to taste like a sausage. We watched a bit of TV after eating and when I awakened, two others were also asleep. A visit with Dan, Karen & family is always a delight. The girls are exuberant beyond belief and Nick has a wit that (I am proud to say) seems to have come from me. What I mean is that it is my kind of humor.

On Monday I awoke to the sound of rain and thunder. After coaxing Mikey out the door for a very brief nature call, I was off the the lab for my blood tests in preparation for my visit to my GP on Friday There was a very light rain as I went in and out and I am sure that the weather deterred others from being there. It was a quick and pleasant visit. Later when I removed the Band-Aid there was no evidence that I had been punctured. As I drove East on 159th St the skies opened and I noticed a car dealership with their lawn sprinklers running during the deluge. Obviously they don't have a dog. I was quickly greeted and seated at Ashford House, just as thinly populated as the blood lab. Since I never use a frying pan at home, I had two eggs up with Winston Sausage with their diced potatoes with onions along along with cinnamon raisin bread. I love the runny yokes ... probably not too good for me but as a reward for donating several vials of blood (which is painless anyway) it can be tolerated.

My reading of C.S. Lewis was a repeat of his comments on Democracy to which I subscribe unequivocally.  He observes that the democratic forms of government have not been established because the general public is most capable of governing itself but because no one individual can be trusted to do so. Amen! Thinking about this I have concluded that having a benevolent king or dictator (same thing) is probably the most efficient form of government but to find the person to do the job is beyond the realm of possibility. Even Solomon, who prayed for ... and was granted ... the gift of wisdom, let his ego overwhelm him and did some very nasty and stupid things. With the gift of Wisdom, God also has imparted the gift of free will and ego will always try to take advantage of that. In addition we know that power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely. So, we turn to a democratic form of government,  which would be a great compromise if everyone was concerned with justice and equality for all, as would be a benevolent king.. Unfortunately we all have our own ax to grind and it is because of that that we could not find the benevolent king to begin with. Are we willing to give up what we have so that the other guy can have some too? Opps, we just slipped into communism!  ... or, its milder cousin Socialism. .

And so we try to balance things out. We do not agree on the correct path or methods. Some become fanatical about their way. Because anything that manages to get done in a democracy is a compromise, there is always opposition. And because everything is a compromise, inherently, it can not be perfect and is pointed out as failure. The fanatics on one side or the other convince the undecided to change to their side and a new group takes power and attempts to move in another direction. The result is a rollercoaster ride with highs, lows and slow climbs followed by rapid falls, all the time twisting this way and that. To complicate things, the business economy has its own agenda and a life that politicians claim to control. (I think that is doubtful) In addition our government must react to the actions of other governments, some democratic, but with their own agendas, and some of completely different forms.

Considering all this, I like to keep my political involvement to a minimum. I have come to the realization that my belief in God and eternity is more important than all of this and I prefer to let my moral and religious values govern my actions in all matters. I also think that if every person on earth followed that path, the rollercoaster of life would become a scenic train ride, maybe not as exciting but smooth and comfortable. An attendant would serve martinis and  hors d'oeuvres.

One day some of us will accept a benevolent kingship. It will not only be heavenly, it will be heaven. We will know that we don't need to have it our way. In the words of C.S. Lewis, those who are included are the ones who have said to God, "Thy will be done." Those who are excluded are the ones to whom God has said. "thy will be done."  For my part, I am willing to begin right now!

If it weren’t for the last minute, nothing would get done.

Tuesday morning my cardiologist's office called to inform me that my stress test results were good. My heart is A-OK. Based on the experiences of of number of well known people recently, that means that I can expect to drop dead at any time. But, of course, that is the normal condition of life. The only difference now is that my urologist can now put me to sleep for his procedure next month knowing he has coved his butt, taking due diligence in case I don't wake up. The fact is that all of my important work is done. No one is depending on me for their survival, their education, or my guidance and I am ready to move on. Not eager ... just ready. It is a great feeling ... when your conscience is clear ... well, as clear as it can be considering the state of being human. So, I'll just keep plugging along as long as I can be useful ... somewhat, that is. My hope, as was Anne's, is that I don't stay here so long that I become a burden ... or, heaven forbid, a nuisance. In that regard, I'll try not to be either but will do my best to be more kind than I need to be. Hay ... that is what it is all about anyway!

Not wanting my close relatives to have to wait until the end of the week for my test results, I sent the above paragraph to them. I immediately got replies which protested that I will never be a burden to them. (Only one said I wouldn't be a nuisance.) My response ... Sometimes becoming a burden is a condition of life over which we have no control. The difference lies in how our burdens are accepted and dealt with. I am confident that my family would deal well with the situation should it occur. However, It would be better for that not to happen. That is what I wish. Allow me the pleasure of that gift for all of us. However, I had the privilege of having the example given by Anne's dad when he came to live with us when he needed someone to live with. If placed in the same situation, I can only hope that I could be a shadow of the gentleman that Harry Lawler was. He was indeed one of the many people who touched my life and left me better for it. It wasn't my intention but my news and comments have elicited the kindest remarks from a number of people. It is gratifying that I seem to have done something right. Anne thought I was hopeless for a long time but she made it her life's work to get me turned around, not so much by nagging, that never seems to work, (she tried that also) but by love and example.

I have been having problems with my right hand man, Microsoft Outlook. It is my mail handler, my address book, my calendar, my note pad, my list of important dates ... birthdays ... anniversaries, my task reminders ... change furnace and water filter, etc, my appointments ... It is my life line to reality. Among other things it filters out a lot of the spam that comes by email and that was the first problem. It stopped filtering spam and I began to get 100's of stupid messages that it had previously ejected from my in-box. I tried to reconfigure the settings to no avail. Then I tried to run Microsoft Office "repair" with no results. I next resorted to trying to reinstall it. That not only failed but it destroyed it completely. That was done on Tuesday afternoon. I have the disk for the 2000 version but I had been using the 2003 version downloaded from the internet, They are both "upgrade" versions of the product so I can not delete it completely and expect to reinstall it. Worse than that ... when I went to use the internet versions of my mail programs, I could not get them to work either !!! I tried resetting my computer using System Restore ... It says there have been no changes. All other programs and applications work as they should. I considered going out to Best Buy and getting a copy of Office 2007 but I was afraid that it would fail to install. And so a message was left for Kevin, my computer guru.

By late afternoon Kevin called. He was about to leave an appointment and would be passing my way after a short stop. Within the hour he was reinstalling my software the right way.  He assured me that I would not want the 2007 version because 1) it is very costly,  2) there is little improved functionality and 3) I would need to learn new and confusing menus. Within minutes he had me up and running ... better than before. He said that he will send information of an anti-spam utility that really works. Wednesday evening I emptied my in box and my Junk mail folder. I set my Outlook Junk mail protection on "High" Thursday morning I found that Outlook had diverted 105 messages to the Junk Mail folder and they were all really junk . There were only 11 junk messages in my in-box. I can live with 90.5% accuracy.

I had not anticipated such quick service from Kevin and I was perfectly willing to wait until he got around to me. After all, I could have fired up my lap top computer if I was desperate and used it for handling my email. There was a time when I would have been all upset over a thing like this but now I realize that there are people out there like Kevin who will come to my aid. That is why we all have different talents, interests, abilities and yes, even personalities. We are here to complement each other so that eventually everything works. Besides, in the big picture, how .important is it?

Life may be hard but it’s also wonderful.

Anne Marie took a day off from work Thursday and gathered with all my granddaughters (5 including Sarah, Dominick's wife) at Karen's house. It was Kolatchky Day! Anne Marie learned to make this Bohemian delight from her mom who learned from my mom and this day was to show our granddaughters how it is done. There are several varieties which lay claim to the name, all seem to originate in Eastern Europe. Some are round with a daub of filling in the center but the dough is not yeast raised and it is more like a common cookie. The true Kolatchky (as far as I am concerned) is made with a yeast raised dough, soft, tender, and flaky. The filling may be cream cheese or fruit including prune, peach, apricot or others. I am partial to poppy seed. After the dough is prepared, it is roller out thin. In one Bohemian Kolatchkyvariety it is cut into squares, the filling applied and the corners folded over the filling to overlap in the middle. For my favorite the dough is cut into triangles, the filling applied and the dough is rolled up resulting in alternating layers of dough and filling. After baking, they are still soft to the touch and before serving sprinkled generously with powdered sugar.

Mikey had been to the groomer on Thursday and after bringing him home I had some lunch and went over to judge the results of my granddaughter's baking lessons..I arrived to find all of them in the pool along with Anne Marie and Karen. In the kitchen I found the fruits of their efforts and after sampling with great care proclaimed them to be Expert Bohemian Kolatchky Bakers, par excellence. After sitting at pool-side for a while I left, with samples, of course, just to verify my grading of the students.  By the bye, I was delighted to find excellent examples of Kolatchky on the table when I met with my Copeland branch of the family last year. Thanks to their mother Sue Polinchek they had been brought up to eat as well as I have.

About 5 PM on Thursday as I went out to get my snail mail the yard guys pulled up. The Forman announced that they were there to trim the shrubs. I indicated for them to go right ahead. I never tell them what to do or how to do it. They are the experts. However, when they got to the back yard, one of them was using a trimmer on the end of a long pole and I asked if they could cut the dead wood out of my sugar maple tree. He tried but his trimmer was not robust enough for the task. I told him to forget about it but these guys are like lions ... once acquiring the scent they must complete the task. He asked if I had a "lopper". I got the device from the shed and he proceeded to climb the tree. A couple dead branches were dispatched but he was chewing on one that would not be severed. The foreman asked if I had a saw and he followed me to the shed, leaving with the saw and my ladder. They soon had all but the topmost dry twigs cut from the tree. As I sipped on my last coffee for the day, they finished trimming the evergreens and cleaning up the debris.  Mikey and I then made a circuit of our little domain, collecting what Mikey had left behind during the past week. Thankfully he is a small dog. The yard was then ready for the lawn crew on Friday.

But I wasn't quite THAT ready. They woke me up on Friday morning. They woke Mikey up too. By the time we got downstairs they had finished their work and when I let Mikey out I went out also and sat on the patio, soaking up the beauty of the morning with the fragrance of fresh cut grass. The lawn and shrubs were all freshly manicured and the bird were singing. It is going to be a beautiful day. It is a beautiful life. Thank You God.
