The World of Grandpa Don
Last Friday after lunch an excursion was made to replenish provisions for the coming week As I checked out of the store the bagger seemed to me to be less than enthusiastic about his situation. When I asked how he was doing his response was a dull "OK." But he did add, "How about you?" I told him that when I got up I decided to have a great day and that everything was going according to plan ... to which he replied ... "But sometimes things happen!". .I responded with, "It is not what happens to you that determines the kind of day you are having, but how you react to what happens." The checker chimed in with ... "I have got to remember that!" As I departed the bagger cheerily said, "Continue with your great day ... but watch out, I may be catching up with you." The exchange was one of those "Random Acts of Kindness" that my friend Bob keeps touting. You don't need to wait for the opportunity to rescue a damsel in distress or give a stranger a hand with a heavy load. An uplifting word or two will often do the job. Everyone benefits. The rest of the afternoon as well as the best part of Saturday was devoted to reading and communing with nature in the gazebo, on the patio or on the swing. Mikey and I both enjoyed being out in perfect weather. The B&B on Friday afternoon enhanced the experience, at least for me. Mikey is a tea-toteler. It is too. cool for swimming ...
unless you are a duck. The photo at the right was taken by Karen not too Karen sent some photos of a couple
more 'chicks', this time in front of the house.
. . It was the occasion of the 8th grade dance. Ana and Kristyn had a ball and afterward the two of them went bowling ... with 6 boys. Aren't there rules about hording? It occurs to me that I may be politically incorrect in referring to my granddaughter and her friend as "chicks". Sorry, but looking at those photos and delving into the vocabulary of my youth ... those two are definitely "chicks". Those six guys would probably agree. .
The Midwest Sliders were in town to play the Chicago Thunderbolts for a spring exhibition game. Anthony and a friend drove in ahead of time to bring his car back and spend the night. He did well but they lost. The game was delayed in starting and lasted late into the night. In the mean time Joe, exhausted from a day of hard work at the boat yard was warming up pitchers in the Thunderbolt bullpen. He got a heavy workout and may curtail that activity in the future. Anthony joined his team mates for the bus ride back to Michigan including an overnight at a motel. Because the team is still overpopulated until the final cuts, they were three to a room. The bus was crowded as well and actually broke down. On top of that, the uniforms are poor quality and skimpy, to say the least ... not an auspicious start to the season. Anthony informed the team officials that he and several others were going to purchase decent pants from a friend of his in the sporting goods business and was told to include the rest of the team in the order with the team picking up the tab. In speaking with the new head coach of the RM College team he arranged for the school to order two complete sets of uniforms from his friend. Back in Michigan, the Sliders won a double header to brighten up the picture a bit. Sunday evening I went scouting. A new restaurant opened in town, Hollywood Bar and Restaurant, and I wanted to see if it qualified as a "Dinner & Cards" establishment. Not every place meets the standards of our little group. The place was the former "Fire & Ice" which did not qualify and was closed down after it's late night bar got into trouble for over-serving a customer who was responsible for a fatal accident. Entering the attractive place I was soon seated surrounded by photos of movie greats and scenes for well known films. My waiter took my drink order as I scanned the menu which was attractively setup as a Hollywood billboard but difficult to read. I selected a salad and the Judy Garland "Our Petit Filet, Grilled to order, with Your Choice of Sauce". The salad was very good and my medium steak melted in the mouth. My choice of sauce was ... no sauce. I checked the desert menu before leaving and there were some very interesting selections. The Appetizer menu was equally attractive and so the establishment is definitely on the qualified list. Later I checked their web site and found menu items I had missed in the resturant. Me thinks I will print the web site menu and bring it with when I go back since it is much more easily read. The paper table covers belied the pricey-ness of the place, a Greek restaurant with ambition. . I have been using Expression Web for this web site for several weeks. At times it plays tricks on me but I have been slowly discovering it's secretes. One difference in it compared to FrontPage is that is has no built in "previewer" but allows you to preview your page giving you the choice of any browser installed on your computer and using various sixe windows.. In using the Netscape browser I found that the heading of this page was not right, elongating the text into a long thin column. However in Internet Explorer it was fine. I found the problem, using one of EW's .setup tools. And that little problem is fixed. I also found that EW does not have the ability to use "WordArt" and that is because WordArt is not compatible with strict web standards, It will use it if pasted into the page from another source but I have found that it is best to convert it to a jpg file so that all browsers will display it properly. The same applies to Microsoft's Clip Art. I no longer use a traditional visitor counter on this site (except for the welcome page) but my tracking code, imbedded in each page tells me that last Friday 30 page titles were viewed a total of 169 times. This included 45 unique visitors of whom 54% were returning visitors. 38 of you use Internet Explorer and only one used Netscape. Several used Firefox or Mozilla which are now combined as one. I went on line and downloaded Firefox and discovered that it was as unforgiving of the mistake I had which caused the problem in the heading. It is now repaired on this page and as I make changes to other pages I'll check for proper functioning in all browsers..
Monday evening I re-heated my Hollywood leftovers and found the meal as good as the night before. That also cut the average price of the meal in half ... a lot more reasonable, I had bad news from my cousin Gay Wands of the Cleveland area clan: Subject: woe is me well, here i sit typing with 1 hand so excuse the 1 case typing, the other arm is a sling. the cats got me up at 5 am and while i was in the kitchen my feet got tangled up and down i went. a trip to the e r and home with my left arm in a cast--fracture in the radius, arm is in a sling. good drugs, tho. doc said it isn't a terrible break, tho and should heal well on it's own. gay My reply: It must be hard to be Gay when you get all tangled up
in cats that put your arm in a cast. My cousin Gay (Gail Adair Lossner Wands) seems to walk around with a cloud over her head, having more troubles than the cartoon character who is always being rained upon (Can't remember his name). In spite of that, her name fits ... Gay = joyful, happy, upbeat and care-free. (the true meaning of the word) She is a person who knows how to react positively to whatever happens to her and a joy to be near.
The cool spring has kept me inside and has given me time to make more improvements to the top of this page, bringing things together, I hope in a more pleasing and user-friendly manner. I also fixed up the bottom of the page, keeping the same elements but grouping them better and making everything compatible with all browsers. You Firefox and Netscape users will now see the page the way I intended it to be seen. I have also been well engaged in reading, alternating between the Book of Wisdom and Tolle's "A New Earth". The two complement each other to a large extent. Tolle uses a concept that I do not entirely agree with describing a person's "Pain-body" as kind of a second personality which is governed and supported by the Ego. He says that in some people it dominates (certainly not in cousin Gay) but I do know people like that. They seem to thrive on having "no- respect" and "nobody loves them". I prefer not to think of it as just their personality and not a dual personality. I know personalities can change because I have seen it in myself. It appears to me that the book should have the sub title, "Awakening to Your Life's Purpose" as its main title. We all seem to fall into the trap of thinking that our state of life is our purpose ... single, married, religious ... or our occupation ... or being happy and successful. The latter is probably most correct as long as we define successful correctly. Being rich or powerful is not necessarily being successful. The Book of Wisdom defines it best. Is not an attainment of life but the way we live our lives ... justly. And here we must define Justice as "Having a right relationship with God". We have been conditioned to believe, if we believe at all, that we have a soul. I prefer to think that we are a soul or that our soul is our being. After all, it is our soul that survives this body and so it seems to me that we, our being or soul, has a body while we are on earth. The concept of having a soul puts our soul in the same category with all our other possessions. We then give it whatever priority that is expedient and convenient to our ego at the time. Our ego, which is only concerned with our body, sees to it that it does not get too much attention. On the other hand, if our soul is our very being it would be, or should be, of prime consideration in our lives. We would then be concerned with "Having a right relationship with God". But how do we go about becoming a friend of God? Our ego wants us to believe that we need to not only satisfy the needs of our (temporary) body but pamper it with things of this life. We seek love and respect. Believe it or not, that is what God wants for us too. But herein lies the paradox. Read my Secret of Life. Since our being, the soul, is not of the body it follows a different logic. To get these things, we must be willing to share them. The more we share them, the more we get. St Francis knew this. He prayed:
O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek ... That last line is the key. It was Anne who said, "If we don't believe that, our religion makes no sense at all." And ... if we do believe that, being in a right relationship with God is the most important goal we can have. My meditation and reflection time on Wednesday included this from the C.S. Lewis readings for May, 21: "I think earth, if chosen instead of Heaven, will turn out to have been, all along, only a region of Hell: and earth, if put second to Heaven, to have been from the beginning a part of Heaven itself." Maybe that is why I feel so content at this time of my life and feel like I'm experiencing Heaven now. This reading was followed by the Prayer for Wednesday in my little Daily Prayer book. It is the one you will find at the top of the page in "The Prayer Corner." It is the personification of "Having a right relationship with God". OK. maybe we can't attain that level of faith but it is worth the try!
Back to grandkid news ... Dan and Karen are very proud to announce that Ana received two awards:. She is the recipient of the Citizenship Award and the Presidential Outstanding Academic Excellence Award for maintaining a 4.0 GPA for all 3 years of Middle School. Grandpa is very proud of also. Congratulations Ana. Anne Marie worked half a day on Wednesday and Marc had meticulously assembled all the tools and materials needed to finish the pool assembly. The two of them struggled with it but even when Joe came home late in the afternoon they had problems. Anne Marie even gave up at one point and started calling pool installers. The boys finally, using patience and fortitude, got the metal wall in place as darkness fell. Thursday evening they tried to get the liner in place but it just did not cooperate. It is frustrating to say the least. .
I
make the most of all
that comes and the least of all that goes. We had a suggestion from a parishioner that we use the web site to announce the death of parishioners. They are listed in the Bulletin but that is usually more than a week after the fact. We have also been sending out an email announcement of the death of prominent parishioners giving visitation and funeral information. After some discussion it was decided that we will send an email out to all our "Include-Me" members giving visitation and funeral information for every funeral held at the parish. The "Include-Me" membership is necessary because spam regulations forbid sending bulk email unless the people have given permission to be included. Signup is done on the web site. We will then place the names of the deceased on the front page of the web site the following Sunday. Now I will need to find a Newsletter Editor to handle that task. Until I do, the job is mine. The email announcements will be a service to the parishioners and it is hoped that this added service will be an incentive for more parishioners to opt-in as "Include-Me" members. Part of Thursday was invested in making all the arrangements to be notified of the funerals, assigning the task of placing the names on the web site and designing the special newsletter so as to be informative, dignified and prayerful.
I look forward to warmer temperatures for the Memorial day weekend.
Memorial Day was formerly known as Decoration Day. This holiday
commemorates U.S. men and women who have died
